EUDR – Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products

Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 on deforestation (EUDR) was adopted to ensure that products placed on the EU market do not contribute to deforestation or forest degradation. It covers key raw materials such as wood, coffee, cocoa, palm oil, soy, rubber, and cattle, as well as derived products like furniture, paper, and leather goods.

To comply, companies must implement a due diligence procedure. First, they need to collect information about the product, the supplier, and the origin of the raw material. Then, they must assess the risk of potential deforestation or illegal production. Finally, they should take mitigation measures to ensure that the risk is negligible before placing or exporting the product.

In addition, companies are required to maintain documented records and submit a due diligence statement through the official EU system. Competent authorities may carry out inspections, while non-compliance can result in fines of up to 4% of the annual EU turnover, product confiscation, or trade restrictions.
